Vision Test - Amsler Grid Screening Test #3

View Amsler Grid

This test can be be an important early indication of macular degeneration or other diseases of the retina. If you usually wear glasses for reading, use them for this test.

How to take this this test
1. Print out the Amsler Grid and tape it at eye level on a well lighted wall.
2. Standing 14 to 16 inches away, look at the dot in the center of the grid.
3. Now cover your left eye while continuing to look at the dot with your right eye. Do not move your gaze from the dot.
4. Did the dot or squares around the dot change shapes or disappear when you covered one eye (see Diagram 1)? Do you see any blur or distortion in the grid (see Diagram 2)? Record the results if you answered "Yes" to either question. Repeat this test, covering the right eye.
5. Record the results.

If you answered "Yes" for either eye, you should make an immediate appointment to see an eye doctor. Delay of even a few days could mean a permanent loss of vision. Tell your doctor about the results of the Amsler Grid Screening.

Because changes in the Amsler Grid can be an important indicator of macular degeneration, it is recommended that you take this test twice a week. Immediately report any changes to your doctor.
